A 2021 Update

Posted by darekasan on February 2, 2021

Hello, everyone! Happy 2021…?

First of all, I’d like to apologize for the lack of updates since our last post. Rest assured, we are still alive. Work on the project slowed down a lot on my end since our last post due to various reasons. JamRules, on the other hand, has been busy working on the Phantasy Star Online 2 fan-translation project.

We’re aware that patch 0.9 contains untranslated text, missing textures and subtitles, amongst other issues. Regarding certain chapters not having translated text, the script files are mostly translated, and they just need to be inserted after QA. We’ll be trying to get these ironed out for our main patch release.

Some of the things still pending include :

  • finish wrapping up the translation
  • assurance of the quality of certain textures and movie files
  • review of consistency of names, locations, etc.

Again, sorry for the radio silence. I’m hoping we can speed things up soon. Also, we could always use testers to find bugs and errors. If you would like to help us out, please feel free to reach out to us on here, or privately on GBATemp.

Thanks for your support.

Patch 0.9 Release…

Posted by darekasan on July 12, 2017

As much as we were against the idea of releasing partial patches, I’ve finally decided to break the embargo we placed on ourselves. When JamRules returns, I am sure we will see a 100% completed patch. In the meantime, however, this will be your best alternative.

This release was actually compiled quite a while ago, and was used to test out some “new” rom-hacking advancements. In light of this, I will say that this release WILL have many bugs and glitches, and though we have translated the entirety of the game’s text, not all of it has been inserted here. However, most if not all of the story has been fully translated for this release.

Update: It seems not all the story has been inserted in this release after all. My apologies. Hopefully we can push out a complete patch some time in the near future.

I’m very sorry for the insanely long wait, and I thank everyone who commented and offered support over the last few years. It’s been a blast working on this project, and I sincerely hope to complete it one day.

Happy New Year! (again)

It’s been a while, huh! I can’t believe it was almost a whole year ago that we made our last post.

Well, we’ve got to make up for that, haven’t we now! Stay tuned  😉

There’s been a long absence of updates, but don’t worry – the project is still going strong!

First, check out our brand new showcase video, which displays just a portion of the progress that has been made so far:

***Help Wanted***

And now the second point, as you might have guessed from the subtitle,
we’re looking for some skilled helpers to give us the push we need to complete this patch.

*Translator(s)*

We are seeking experienced help to complete the few remaining untranslated scripts, as well as to review our already-translated ones to ensure that quality is satisfactory.

Requirements:
-Strong reading and listening Japanese (and English 😉 ;)) skills (No machine translations please)
-Commitment, dedication and free time

Example jobs:
-Translation of outstanding scripts (such as NPC speech, dictionary text, etc.)
-Bug-testing (playing through the game multiple times to check for bugs, glitches, errors in translation context and typesetting problems)

Below is an excerpt from Chinami who provides the members of Sol Trigger a much needed place to re-supply.

*Graphics Editor(s)*

We are looking for aid in creating modified graphics, a must for the patch to have a professional feel.

Requirements:
-Strong image editing skills
-Commitment, dedication and free time

Example jobs:
-Editing a range of images – from ones overlaid with text that needs to be translated to images with only text. See the examples below.

Somewhat old news for those that have been following it but the developer of Sol Trigger, Imageepoch, has now officially been declared bankrupt.

Hopefully the staff will be able to move elsewhere and continue to develop games.

And yes as usual we are still going, so don’t worry.

Recently an initial hack for variable width font has been added and now letters can be spaced individually (like computer font’s usually are, including this one. As opposed to this).

The font still needs some work but here are some quick comparisons, once complete text should hopefully look nice and neat.

No idea on a release date but the project is still very much alive.

Hope you all have a great 2015.

Progress Update

It’s time for one of those rare progress updates. We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting news of how things are going. Well, fear not, the team has been working hard in order to make this patch a reality, and will continue to do so.

These screenshots below demonstrate the various aspects of the game we have addressed so far. Of course, these are just examples and we expect to reach a professional feel for the final release.

Chapter introductions: work in progress on this one

As displayed above, a fair chunk of progress has been made so far but unfortunately there is still much left to do.

Obviously, completion of the translation and its perfection is an essential part of this patch and is no trivial task. However, typesetting shouldn’t be overlooked either as it can require considerable effort to ensure that text looks presentable, fits in the available space and still maintains its intended meaning.

Now, as the attentive may have already noticed, there are many, many small images that require editing.
Not only this, but textures and some images have Japanese text hard-subbed, troublesome when creating translated assets.

Here’s an example of an original image with Japanese text

Work in progress to create a translated resource that captures the original’s spirit

Some programming will be necessary to allow editing of the various kinds of texture used and we also have plans to make adjustments to the font. Similarly, videos need editing which requires typesetting, timing and some re-encoding.

Additionally, there are some technical issues to address and some asm hacks to improve on.

As you can see, there is still plenty left to do and as I hope you appreciate this is a huge undertaking with many challenges to face.

We will be releasing the patch when it is fully complete, there is no time frame for this, but rest assured, we are working hard to produce a patch of high quality.

And as always, we would like to thank all those that are supporting our efforts.

Modified Textures

Originally I was going to leave the textures as is but for a more professional look I have taken the time to update the tools to extract and convert the game’s textures . Here is a quick example below, the final release will have neatly modified textures and will include the character names which can be seen in the member list.

skills menu mod example

You may notice that Swap PC is a bugged, the bug that caused this has already been fixed and this of course be no be present in the final release. Basically I forgot to reserve a colour for transparent.

Example of game texture converted for edit

Some of the new features that have been added to the tool since the last update include:

  • Extraction of textures
  • Batch convert game format 8bit indexed textures to true colour bitmaps
  • Batch convert bitmaps to game ready format
  • Updated script exporter
  • Automated script importer

As always translation and editing is ongoing and big thanks to our supporters.

Adjusted line limits

Just finished with the auto-newlining, previously this meant a max of 31 chars per line as below.

Image

Now we can put as many as we want.

new1

Should make editing dialog a lot easier since we can now have loads of text.

Image

The text insertion tools have been done for a while so and (hopefully) this the last technical issue to sort out so now we just need the script done.

Each text entry has it’s own limit that needs changing but the important ones are now done.

Other edits have been made to map/area names, the shop, choice prompts, etc.

And adjusted spacing

I’ve done some adjustments to the text spacing as shown below.

And here’s some comparisons, the original is on top and the current one is the second one
